the first presidential debate one day away. this is the romney pre-game show. will mitt romney be held accountable for lies and distortions about president obama's record? we got a sneak preview of what happens when mitt romney is forced to tell the truth. a fox affiliate here in denver asked romney to explain what paul ryan could not, how he plans to pay for $5 trillion tax cut by only eliminating deductions. >> there's an option. you could say everybody is going to get up to a deduction and you could use your home mortgage deduction or others, health care deduction and fill that bucket, if you will, the $17,000 bucket that way and higher income people might have a lower number. >> at least the plan has a name. it's the bucket plan. mitt romney will cap deductions at $17,000 for all americans. is that good for the middle class? do the math. for rich americans, the cap, it just might be lower than that. he was very vague on that point as well. the big problem with romney's bucket plan besides being hilarious is it would only cover $1 to $2 trillion of the $5 tr

president obama did not win the first debate against mitt romney. whether or not you're happy about that he didn't win. but if your takeaway from this conspiracy theory in this debate is the reason the president didn't win is because mitt romney cheated, then what is the utility of that theory for you? what is the utility of that information? how do you think president obama should then prepare for the second debate? should he just do exactly what he did this past wednesday night, except keep a closer eye out for the cheating because that is the only reason he lost? i mean, it may be comforting to tell yourself this is what really went wrong here but that is not really what went wrong here and making the case that it was does not help your candidate. the worst example of this though, the invention of a comforting new parallel reality that does not mean you have to face hard truths. the worst new instance of this is how the right today responded to the new jobs numbers. today the unemployment rate dropped from 8.1% to 7.8%. it didn't drop for any of

now that it romney's post debate bounce is fading, we'll probably hear it again. the latest poll shows obama's lead widening to 5 points again. the president was shoring up the vote. he dedicated a moment to cesar chavez. >> where there had once been despair, cesar gave workers a reason to hope. it's people. more than higher wages or better working conditions. that was cesar's gift to us. a reminder that we are all god's children. >> president obama dedicating a monument to cesar chavez. let's bring in ari melber. great to have you with us tonight. president obama is not taking his lead or his strength from the hispanic community. he wants more. playing to his base, how smart a strategy is it? >> i think it's smart and i think what the president has to do right now is get out there and get into the fight. i think people want to see him talking to voters, talking about the unemployment numbers, which as you pointed out, are improving. still tough out there, but the best in four years. and i think that's the thing about the debates. they happen, but on the ground, t

how does mitt romney's jump, as you've seen it so far, stack up with prior presidential debates? >> well, certainly, his debate performance itself is historic! you know, we've said to americans, who did better? it was a 52-point margin. and this is thursday and friday, and by then, i think people who have been watching your station and others have kind of learned that romney did better, but nevertheless, that's a huge gap, as you see. clinton also did well in '92 against bush the elder, but not as well. and barack obama himself did good back in '08, but again, not as well. but as we've been talking about, the real impact of the debates that people are interested in is, does it change the probability that one candidate will win or not? and romney picked up short term, but long term doesn't look as much, but we'll continue to monitor it. >> there is also the question of the vice presidential debate. have vice presidential debates ever moved the numbers in any significant way, frank? >> interesting question. can't go back to the 1800s. we don't see it. you know, we don't poll as muc
